Nursery practitioner – Job Description

Aims of role

1. To enthuse, motivate and care for all the children in our care

2 To work effectively as part of our friendly team

3 To implement the daily routine in the nursery

4 To ensure nursery is a safe place for children through implementing all policies and procedures

Responsible to Manager / Room Leader

Duties and Responsibilities

1. To plan a programme of high quality activities suitable to the age range of children

2. To deliver high quality activities / interactions with the children

3. To keep a proper up to date assessment folder for your key children

4. To be an effective key person

5. To follow the Staff Code of Conduct

6. To follow all setting Policies and Procedures

7. Liaising effectively with parents/carers and other family members

8. To be flexible within the working practices of the setting. Being prepared to help where needed, including to undertake certain domestic jobs within the Setting, e.g. preparation of snack meals, cleansing of equipment etc

9. Recording accidents in the accident book. Ensure the manager has initialled the report before the parent receives it

10. To ensure every child is collected by someone known to the setting and visitors are checked appropriately before entering

11. To respect the confidentiality of any information received

12. Specific aims when working directly with children: To be enthusiastic and engage children

To maintain ratios in all areas of the nursery
To interact effectively with the children
To be at the children’s level
To ask open questions to prompt thinking
To follow hygiene procedures
Greet or say goodbye to all parents and children
Use children’s proper names
Ensure the children display the characteristics of effective learning

13. To be aware of the high standards of the setting and to uphold its reputation at all times.

14. To actively promote and support the safeguarding of children and young people in the workplace, ensuring the setting Safeguarding Policy is observed at all times.
