Description

PAIR OF WILLY GUHL TILTED PLANTERS, DIABOLO SATELLITE SPINDLE PLANTERS, FIBRE CEMENT CONCRETE, 47 cm tall 64cm diam - FRENCH VINTAGE MID CENTURY

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

Part of our collection of mid century planters, we got these at a vide maison in Reims, Champagne, where they had apparently been used to flank a doorway since the 1960s.

They’re a rare pair of Willy Guhl satellite, diabolo, spindle or tilted planters that are well aged with some attractive weathering, patina, and moss on their surfaces.

An iconic and instantly recognisable design that is stylish, robust and yet surprisingly light.

Guhl was one of the first industrial designers in Switzerland and first made his mark by experimenting with new materials and creating pieces in simple yet elegant forms.
In 1951 Eternit commissioned Guhl to create a line of attractive and durable planters using fibre concrete or fibre cement which enabled numerous shaped designs.
Internet research reveals this to be a tilting bowl planter produced under the Diabolo line.

In good sound condition with wear, scratches, chips and knocks consistent with age and use - please examine photographs carefully for condition.
Solid and sound with no structural damage.
NOTE: There are are a few chips to the base edges that I’ve tried to photograph - see photos
NOTE: The planter to the right as pictured has a hairline crack around the “waist” of the spindle. The planter is still structurally sound and the there is no movement to the crack when pulled - see photos.
Nicely aged with a good coating of moss and lichen.
There are faint makers marks to the interior of the bowl to the left as pictured which are barely legible but I read as 177 (or several 7s) - see photos.

Approximate dimensions:
47 cm tall,
64 cm diameter to the top,
44 cm diameter to the base,
Not weighed but estimated at about 14 kg.
