This is a watercolour on paper. It shows a view of Aberdeen City Centre. The view shows part of the Mercat Cross (Market Cross) and the Town House behind it.

It is signed lower right ‘Auld’ for Eric Auld. It is mounted and contained within a thin gilt frame and glazed. To the rear is the title of the painting written by the artist, and also an inscription from the first purchaser of the painting stating it was bought directly from the artist in 1972. The painting is in good condition without any marks. The size of the image is 12 inches (width) by 8 inches (height).

Aberdeen’s Mercat Cross was built in 1686 by John Montgomery, an Aberdeen architect. It is in the Castlegate area in the old burgh of New Aberdeen.

Born in Aberdeen. Eric Auld was a Scottish painter in oil and watercolour. From 1948 to 1953, he attended Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen under the tutelage of Alberto Morrocco, Hugh Adam Crawford and Robert Sivell. During his post-diploma year, he received the Robert Brough Travelling Scholarship enabling him to travel in France, Italy and Spain

He taught at Aberdeen Academy and Kincorth Academy. Specialised in local landscapes.

He exhibited regularly at the Aberdeen Artists Society from 1959.
