BUBBLES PEARS SOAP VINTAGE (1886) JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS'S PRINT IN ORIGINAL FRAME

Description

A chromolithograph of artist John Everett Millais's (1829-1896) painting 'Bubbles', originally entitled 'A Child's World', painted in 1885-6 and shows a boy blowing bubbles with a pipe and a bowl of soap suds. The boy was the artist’s grandson, Willie James, aged about four, the young boy grew up and in later life became an Admiral. The image was most famously used in advertisements for Pears Soap. This is a genuine original framed print, which has been in the family since purchased by my great, great grandfather, Gosport councillor Johnston (pictured) from around the late 1800's. He lived in Hartington Rd, Gosport, Hampshire UK and the picture hung at the top of the stairwell, until it fell and the glass was broken during an air raid in 1941, after the house next door was destroyed (pictured) and he was sadly killed. The picture was stored in my Mothers attic all this time and the glass and backboard was replaced by a professional framer. These early original full size prints on thick card are fairly rare to find, as today many modern copies are still reprinted, but in a much smaller format. The print is in good condition, there are some small dings and scuffs to the original frame, as you would expect after surviving a bombing and being over 130 years old.
