Description
We have now reached the age when we need to start getting our affairs in order and decluttering (the Swede’s call it ‘Death Cleaning’!) for the sake of our children. My wife has started with the bedroom and come across this family heirloom – a solid sterling silver nurse’s belt buckle. It’s in excellent condition and features a central perched bird with outstretched wings surrounded by openwork filigree. It was hallmarked in Birmingham with the date letter for 1917. The makers mark J.M.B. is also stamped on it. He was John Millward Banks, who established his business in 1863 and died in 1911 but the business continued under his son until 1926.
The full buckle is 12cm long x 6.5cm wide and weighs about 58g.
It is available for free collection by the purchaser or I would be happy to deliver it for the cost of fuel (15p/mile) within a reasonable distance of our house in DH1 5. If you require delivery, please contact me beforehand to agree the cost. Payment to be either cash or bank transfer on collection or delivery.
I could send the item by the Royal Mail Tracked 24 service at an additional cost of £5 but it would have to be at the purchaser’s risk with payment in advance because the item, being silver, would not be covered by the Royal Mail insurance for either loss or damage. However, the service offers end to end tracking with photo on delivery and notification to the recipient of delivery.
