Description
Gx58aov. 2008 VW crafter Minibus. XL Maxi I believe. Twin rear wheel. Over 3.5t. Spares or repairs. Side step, diesel heater. Long story incoming……
Unfinished camper conversion, all rear seats removed and not included. It’s classed as a minibus so will need to be reclassified. It is a non runner though this is not mechanical it is an electrical issue, possibly the ECU. It drove to where it sits. It’s a friends vehicle and I let him store it in my drive. This was initially purchased in 2022 as a minibus with the idea of converting to a motorhome. It was running very well when purchased, driven back from sale 2+ hours, drove very well. It was going to be a full motorhome with toilet and shower, 4 berth.
Interior was stripped and bodywork began with the screen being removed. Unfortunately the chap doing it lost access to his unit and couldn’t find another swiftly so the project stalled. The owner had nowhere to store it and asked if could store it at my house, he’d done a similar thing for me in the past so has sat in my drive since.
Unfortunately the screen didn’t come back with the vehicle as was misplaced during the move. The van was sealed with heavy plastic and duct tape. I was starting it on a fairly regular basis over time to keep it going and once the screen was located it was put back in. I had a 3 month period away working and upon returning the battery was flat. I charged it up and went to start it and the key turned but would not go past position 1 so couldn’t start. Few weeks went by and went to have another look but flat again, It was at this time I was attempting to connect the battery to the charger lost my footing on the gravel and slipped. One of the cables came into contact with the opposite terminals and there was some sparks. I checked the fuses etc. but This may have affected the ECU. I will stress the no turn key issue was presenting before the cross polarity event as I was investigating this issue when the polarity cross occurred.
I did try to further investigate the fault using knowledge from forums but unfortunately no luck. I checked fuses and some appeared to have corrosion so I replaced the fuse box. This led me to believe the rig had water ingress when the screen was out. I sent away the key and ecm to have it checked but was tested and working fine apparently. I also tried fitting an emulator to the electronic steering lock as I read this can cause no key turn issues, sadly no effect. A friend tried with vcds to have a look and read the fault codes. Unfortunately he could not get any communication with the vehicle at all, green light on the plug but no link despite trying different ways. The carpets and trim is removed from fault finding but is all present and in the back of it.
The owner has decided to cut his losses at this point and asked if could list for him.
Apologies for the very long description but wanted to be as accurate as possible.
It the bodywork finishing, Last time it was worked on the plan was to raptor coat it and the painter had been experimenting with trials of products to use so it’s a bit of a patchwork. I’m aware it’ll be a lot of work but I’m sure it will make a great rig. Suit someone electrically savvy. Would make race truck, camper, motorhome. It will need to be weighed and reclassified as a private vehicle. As said engine ran very well before just can’t get the electrics right to get it to actually start.
Please note this vehicle will have to be recovered and towed away due to issues. Please remember how large the vehicle is when arranging this. Also the vehicle needs to be removed asap after sale. Located in Kings Lynn.
