Description
"Frogbit" refers to an aquatic plant, and there are a couple of well-known species that share the common name:
* European Frogbit (Hydrocharis morsus-ranae):
* Description: A native floating plant in Europe and parts of Asia. It resembles a miniature water lily with small, kidney-shaped leaves.
* Flowers: It produces delicate, small white flowers with three petals and a yellow center, typically in July and August.
* Ecology: It provides shelter for fish, tadpoles, and dragonfly larvae. It survives winter by producing dormant buds called turions that sink to the bottom.
* Status: It is considered invasive in some areas, like the Great Lakes region of North America, where it was introduced.
* Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum):
* Description: A popular free-floating plant in the aquarium and pond trade, native to Central and South America. It has round, glossy green leaves.
* Uses: It's valued by aquarists for its long, hairy roots that provide cover for fish and fry, and it's a good natural water purifier.
* Growth: It can grow very fast, forming dense mats on the water's surface, which might require trimming to prevent blocking light to submerged plants
