Description

This fine 17th-century engraving shows Saint Mary the Egyptian, one of Christianity’s most powerful symbols of repentance, humbly receiving communion from Saint Zosimas in the desert. Mary’s story — a former courtesan turned ascetic hermit — inspired countless artists for its message of profound humility and spiritual redemption.

This piece was engraved by Claude Duflos (1665–1727), a celebrated French printmaker noted for his superb line work and sensitive rendering of Baroque religious scenes. The composition is after Beaugin (Beaugin pinxit), an artist of the French classical school whose balanced figures and gentle drapery echo the influence of the great masters of the period.

The engraving was published in Paris by the esteemed Audran family workshop on Rue Saint-Jacques — a major hub for fine prints that brought images of devotion into the homes of the educated classes. Rich in detail and devotion, this piece beautifully connects three names from France’s golden age of printmaking.
