Description
This Lot will be sold at auction at Flight of Elegance; Farnborough on Saturday 16th May.Owned within the Calthorpe family for over 100 yearsLargely originalThe Calthorpe 2-stroke motorcycle represents a fascinating chapter in early British lightweight motorcycling. Produced by the Calthorpe Motorcycle Company of Birmingham, these machines were designed to be affordable, practical, and easy to maintain, appealing to everyday riders in the post-World War I era. Typically powered by a small single-cylinder two-stroke engine of around 250cc, the 1923 models delivered approximately 2 1/2 horsepower. Calthorpe offered both single-speed and two-speed versions, a clutch and kick-starter were standard features. Lubrication was typically handled through a sight-feed system rather than pre-mixing oil with fuel. This combination of features made the bike accessible to novice riders and commuters. The design of the 1923 Calthorpe was compact and lightweight, often featuring narrow tyres, simple braking systems, and a belt or chain final drive.Originally registered on 19th January 1923, this Calthorpe 2-Stroke is in largely original condition. The tyres have recently been changed and the engine kicked-over, although no attempt was made to start the motorcycle. This appears to be a 243cc, 2 1/2 hp single cylinder engine (Peco type), with a two-speed countershaft gearbox, with the gear lever mounted to the right of the fuel tank. Supplied with a buff logbook only, showing the last change of keeper in January 1925 the new vendor will have to apply for and up to date V5 registration document. Still owned within the Calthorpe family, this is a great opportunity to purchase a unique piece of British motoring history. Today, surviving examples of the 1923 Calthorpe 2-stroke are rare and highly valued by collectors. They offer a glimpse into a time when motorcycles were evolving rapidly, balancing innovation with simplicity to meet the needs of a growing market of riders. Consigned by Stewart Banks
