Description

Job description:

Role Purpose

BREL Facades is seeking an Estimating Assistant to support the preparation of cost estimates, tender submissions and commercial proposals for façade remediation and construction projects.

The role will assist the estimating team throughout the tender process, from receipt of enquiry and review of tender documentation through to quantity take-offs, supplier enquiries, pricing analysis and final submission preparation.

This is a hands-on role requiring regular communication with suppliers, subcontractors, the procurement team, quantity surveyors, design managers and operational staff. The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of assigned estimating tasks, ensuring accurate, timely and well-presented tender information is provided to support business growth and project success.

Key Responsibilities

1. Review tender documents, drawings, specifications and client requirements to understand project scope and tender requirements.

2. Carry out quantity take-offs and measurements using drawings, specifications and digital measuring software.

3. Assist in preparing detailed cost estimates for labour, materials, plant, subcontractors and other project-related costs.

4. Issue enquiries to suppliers and subcontractors and obtain competitive quotations, lead times and technical information.

5. Compare quotations received and identify any cost, specification or programme implications.

6. Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain clarification on quotations, products and services where required.

7. Maintain and update supplier and subcontractor databases, ensuring pricing information remains current and competitive.

8. Assist with preparing Bills of Quantities (BoQs), pricing schedules and supporting tender documentation.

9. Support value engineering exercises by identifying potential cost savings and alternative solutions.

10. Help prepare tender submissions, ensuring all pricing information is accurate, complete and submitted within required deadlines.

11. Maintain estimating records, tender files and project information in accordance with company procedures.

12. Liaise with procurement, commercial and operational teams to ensure a smooth handover of successful tenders into live projects.

13. Assist with post-tender negotiations, clarifications and submission queries where required.

14. Support post-tender reviews and lessons-learned exercises to continually improve estimating accuracy and processes.

15. Maintain clear records of tender assumptions, qualifications and commercial decisions.

16. Monitor market rates, material costs and industry trends to support competitive pricing.

17. Develop positive working relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders.

18. Provide administrative and analytical support to the Estimating Team and Commercial Director as required.

19. Assist with business development activities, market research and lead generation as required.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be organised, analytical and commercially aware, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Previous experience in estimating, construction, procurement, quantity surveying or façade construction would be advantageous, although we would also consider a recent graduate looking to develop a career within the construction industry.

The candidate should be confident communicating with suppliers, subcontractors and internal project teams and be comfortable gathering information, seeking clarification and working to tight tender deadlines.

An ability to understand construction drawings, specifications, material schedules and technical documentation would be highly beneficial. Strong attention to detail is essential, particularly when reviewing quantities, pricing information and tender submissions.

Good Microsoft Excel, Outlook and general IT skills are required. Experience using take-off software such as Bluebeam and document management systems such as SharePoint would be advantageous.

Key Attributes

We are looking for somebody who is proactive, organised and detail-oriented; communicates clearly and professionally; takes ownership of their work; demonstrates strong numerical and analytical skills; works effectively under pressure to meet deadlines; maintains accurate records; and collaborates well with commercial, procurement, design, operations and site teams.

What We Offer

1. Competitive salary, dependent on experience.

2. 28 days' annual leave including bank holidays, plus an additional day's annual leave for each completed year of service.

3. Discretionary bonus based on company performance and individual contribution.

4. Training and development opportunities as you progress within the estimating and commercial team.

5. Opportunity to develop from Estimating Assistant into an Estimator role and take increasing ownership of tenders, pricing exercises and commercial responsibilities.

6. The opportunity to join a growing specialist façade contractor with a strong secured pipeline of work.

7. Holiday trading scheme, allowing employees to buy or sell annual leave.

8. Company car scheme available through salary sacrifice.

9. Workplace pension in accordance with statutory requirements.

10. Exposure to a wide range of façade remediation and new-build projects across London and the wider UK.

11. Cycle to Work scheme.

12. Quarterly company events and participation in company charity events.

13. Birthday gift card.

What Success Looks Like

The successful candidate will support the delivery of accurate, competitive and timely tender submissions by producing reliable quantity take-offs, obtaining and analysing supplier quotations, and maintaining well-organised estimating records. They will proactively identify commercial risks and opportunities, meet tender deadlines, and provide the estimating team with the information required to secure new projects and support the continued growth of the business.
