1951 MG TD 1250. The MG TD occupies a very special place in the story of post-war British motoring. Introduced in 1949 as the evolution of the earlier TC, it combined traditional pre-war MG charm with important modern improvements such as independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and a wider track, making it far more usable and confidence-inspiring than its predecessors while retaining the unmistakable character that defined the marque. It was also the model that helped establish MG’s reputation worldwide, particularly in the United States, and today it remains one of the most recognisable and cherished British sports cars ever produced.
This beautifully presented 1951 MG TD is a particularly desirable example, being a genuine original UK right hand drive car that still proudly carries its original registration number. Finished in classic red with matching red leather upholstery and complemented by a black mohair hood, side screens and tonneau cover, it has exactly the period presence enthusiasts hope to find in a TD.
Perhaps most special of all is its remarkable ownership story. Acquired by its previous custodian over 40 years ago, the car became a lifelong passion and was carefully preserved throughout that time. It was maintained privately by a neighbour who was a professional classic car mechanic associated with the Octagon Car Club, alongside occasional specialist attention where required. Even after the owner sadly lost his eyesight in later life, the car remained central to family life, continuing to provide treasured journeys and memories. Following his passing last year, the family have now made the thoughtful decision to pass the car on to a new enthusiast who will continue its story.
Mechanically the MG remains reassuringly correct and honest. The engine and gearbox are original and running smoothly, the cooling system has recently been refreshed with new coolant, fresh fuel added and the car started readily after approximately a year off the road, demonstrating the underlying soundness of the mechanical components. The engine has also been converted for unleaded fuel, making the car easier to enjoy in modern conditions. Until three years ago the MG benefited from servicing every six months, with its last minor service carried out just over a year ago prior to a period of storage.
Importantly, this is a car that has been preserved rather than altered. It retains the character and integrity that collectors increasingly value.
On the road, the MG TD delivers the quintessential early 1950s British sports car experience. The eager 1250cc XPAG engine, positive four speed gearbox and wonderfully direct steering combine to create a driving experience that is engaging, tactile and full of charm.
