Description

DIN 2303 Accredited Day rate welding engineering contractor required for circa 5 days per month. Job Description The Aerospace Welding Engineer will be a subject matter expert in welding and brazing, responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing welding procedures that comply with rigorous aerospace and defense standards, particularly DIN 2303. The role involves ensuring the quality, integrity, and traceability of all welded components for critical applications. Key Responsibilities Procedure Development: Design, develop, and qualify welding procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (WPQR). Compliance & Quality Assurance: Ensure all welding operations meet the stringent quality requirements of DIN 2303, ISO 3834, and other relevant aerospace/military standards (e.g., AWS D17.1/D17.1M). Personnel Management: Supervise, train, and qualify/re–qualify welders and operators to the required standards, maintaining detailed records of their certifications. Technical Analysis: Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering specifications to determine appropriate welding techniques and ensure compliance with design requirements. Inspection & Testing: Coordinate and oversee non–destructive testing (NDT) and destructive testing of welded components, including visual inspection, X–ray, and ultrasonic testing, ensuring all results are documented and meet standards. Troubleshooting & Improvement: Analyze test and in–service data to identify faults, perform root cause analysis (RCA), and implement continuous improvement (Kaizen, Lean) initiatives for welding processes. Material Control: Ensure correct material identification, traceability (e.g., 3.1 certificates according to DIN EN 10204), and proper handling of welding consumables. Equipment Management: Determine the suitability of welding equipment, ensure proper calibration and maintenance, and set up advanced equipment (e.g., automatic seam welding machines, robotic cells). Skills Required Technical Skills: Proficiency in various welding processes including Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG/GTAW), Metal Inert Gas (MIG/GMAW), Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), and Manual Metal Arc (MMA). Expert knowledge of aerospace materials, including aluminum alloys, stainless steel, titanium, and Inconel, and how heat affects their metallurgical properties. Strong ability to interpret complex technical documentation, blueprints, and welding symbols. Experience with advanced techniques like orbital or mechanised welding and post–weld validation. Soft Skills: Strong problem–solving and analytical abilities, with meticulous attention to detail. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical reports, procedures (SOPs), and training staff. Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multi–functional team (quality, design engineering, production). Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations in a manufacturing setting Qualifications Required Essential Qualifications & Skills Qualifications: A degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience). International Welding Engineer (IWE) or European Welding Engineer (EWE) qualification is highly desirable. Mandatory: Experience and certification in accordance with DIN 2303 for production and maintenance of military products. CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector certification (or equivalent NDT qualifications) is mandatory for effective coordination and inspection Accreditation Requirement: Must be qualified to/experienced with DIN 2303 standards (specifically for military/defense products).
