I’d been in the financial services industry for 12 years and within marketing for the last 6 years. I hadn’t felt inspired by my choice of industry and wanted to understand how and why I had taken the route I had and whether this route was right for me in the future. James and I explored my PRISM Professional report containing my PRISM Map, which really helped deepen my understanding of how I work and connect with people. It allowed me to understand my strengths and what I should focus on, as well as, showing my weaknesses, to be accepting of them as well as how avoid them being put into play! The career map showed that my underlying preferences align well to the job and industry which I’m in. The sessions really helped boost my confidence. During the coaching sessions I was made redundant but quickly found a new job and used James’ distinctively unique NERDs exercise to ensure alignment. With James’ help I negotiated a far greater salary (an increase of 46%). A massive thank you James. Before working with James, I was struggling with a lack of clarity in my career and feeling insecure about my professional value. I contacted James after experiencing an unexpectedly difficult and tumultuous time at work. My boss had quit very suddenly, and my role was suddenly surrounded by uncertainty and politics in a way that I hadn’t experienced before. This obviously posed some challenges and knocked my confidence. I hadn’t ever had any career coaching before but felt that I needed some perspective and wisdom so I could process what had happened. James provided me with coaching using the PRISM brain mapping tool. This coaching provided me with the framework to understand my underlying strengths and weaknesses, as well as facilitating some objective analysis and explanation as to why I experienced that difficult period how I had. The coaching helped me to rationalise what I had been through at work. This meant I could draw the lessons from that experience that I needed to learn, as well as put it in the past and move forward. I have recently changed roles and now I have the tools to understand how to shape my job so that I can play more to my strengths at work. James is a generous and wise person which are two characteristics I really appreciated in our coaching relationship. I also greatly enjoyed talking to him more generally about life and cricket! When I first met James, I was facing a very turbulent time at work (seemingly due to circumstances beyond my control) after enjoying a previous ten years of relative contentment, growth and fulfilment. I was struggling to make sense of all the elements related to the changing environment and to find any sort of cohesion in either my thoughts or actions. Most importantly, in the first session James patiently provided the breathing space for me to explain the situation I found myself in and to provide the all the context needed for him to coach me through that. Through our subsequent calls, we worked on establishing what the core issues were in isolation and how they fitted together as a bigger picture. When you break up one seemingly large and immovable obstacle into manageable chunks it really allows you to see picture more clearly. We worked through important features of workplace issues such as establishing which stakeholders were responsible and which were accountable for the issues – allowing me to focus my efforts on the right people in order to solve problems. Later, we worked on my relationships with both my seniors and the team members that I manage, understanding the importance of what parts of our working environment we like, what we don’t like and more importantly what we would like to see more of. In addition to this we established the importance of asking what I can do to make the job better for those I reported to, stakeholders who are peers and also the team I was responsible for. This was particularly important as it really allows you to push aside not only harmful feelings of negativity, but also any sense of injustice. It may be justified, but it’s rarely if ever helpful to any parties involved. Essentially, despite breaking things down initially, we did ultimately take a big step back to see the bigger picture. Through this clarity, I established the importance of not simply accommodating the issues but striving to find real solutions in the right manner. Where outcomes remained imperfect despite these efforts, I’ve now become better at making peace with those elements of the job too. It's important to note that my needs were primarily work based, but the process could easily be extended to all round life coaching to be equally as effective. James won’t give you the answers and nor should he – he will provide the clarity within the chaos for you to make those decisions yourself and as a result I can confidently say that I found myself in a much better state of mind at the end of the coaching sessions than when I entered them. On that basis I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend James for work/life coaching.
