Description

This lot will be auctioned via Iconic Auctioneers, The Iconic Sale at Race Retro 2026 - Collectors' Cars on Saturday the 21st of February, Stoneleigh Park, Stoneleigh Rd, Coventry, CV8 2LG. , An exceptionally well-sorted and tastefully uprated example of Jaguar’s revered MK2 saloon, this unique car was first registered in August 1960 and presents today with a thoughtfully engineered specification that combines classic elegance with discreet performance enhancements. Powered by a substantially uprated 4.2-litre XK engine and four-speed all-synchro manual gearbox with overdrive, it offers an engaging and surprisingly modern driving experience whilst remaining faithful to the spirit of the original car.Originally delivered as a 2.4-litre automatic from Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory, this MK2 has been the subject of a comprehensive and well-documented transformation that elevates it far beyond its standard specification. At the heart of the car lies a period-correct but extensively modified 4.2-litre XK engine, benefitting from a lightened and balanced flywheel, fast road camshaft, and straight-port cylinder head. Twin 2” HD8 SU carburettors with open trumpets ensure ample air intake, while a stainless steel six-branch manifold handles the exhaust with efficiency and style. The engine bay also features modern enhancements including a 123 electronic ignition system, upgraded alloy radiator and a subtly louvered bonnet to aid cooling – each selected to improve reliability without compromising the car’s period appearance.Complementing the powertrain is a range of mechanical upgrades designed to bring handling and braking in line with the performance on offer. These include larger brakes, uprated anti-roll bar, a limited-slip differential, and GAZ shock absorbers. Steering is transformed by a Vicarage rack and pinion setup with EZ electric assistance, vastly improving feedback and precision over the original system. The car sits on body-coloured 6x15 outer-laced competition wire wheels shod with grippy Pirelli P4000 205/70 R15 tyres, offering both visual appeal and enhanced roadholding.Cosmetically, the MK2 retains a traditional silhouette with a more purposeful demeanour. Finished in a rich shade of Jaguar Indigo Blue – a modern interpretation that suits the shape beautifully – the car appears largely standard at a glance, with only subtle cues hinting at its capabilities. The interior is equally inviting, with lightly patinated red hide, superb walnut veneer dashboard and door tops, and attention to period detail throughout. On the road, this MK2 delivers an experience far beyond what might be expected from a 1960s saloon. The upgraded engine provides ample torque across the rev range and the manual gearbox with overdrive offers long-legged cruising ability. Ride comfort remains excellent, while the improved suspension, brakes and steering transform the car into a truly communicative and confidence-inspiring driver’s machine.Whether described as a ‘restomod’ or, perhaps more aptly, an ‘evolution’, this Jaguar MK2 stands out as a rare and highly desirable proposition. It offers the charm and craftsmanship of a classic British saloon, subtly reimagined with thoughtful enhancements that bring it to life for modern roads. With exceptional build quality, considered upgrades and a refined aesthetic, it's an ideal choice for the enthusiast seeking both performance and presence in a truly individual motor car.
