French Proscenium Toy Theatre ‘Avant Scene' by Pellerin Epinal, France 1880

Description

A French Proscenium toy theatre, 'Avant scene' by Pellerin, Epinal, France, circa 1880, mounted on a sturdy wooden frame with slotted stage to hold scenes and characters (scene is a town from the series 'Grand Theatre Nouveau') together with Pellerin/Epinal characters and a later set of Pied Piper figures. This came from the collection of the late Peter Baldwin who played Derek Wilton in Coronation Street.

Mr Baldwin toured Britain and the continent using his collection, reviving a lost art and bringing to life long-lost plays. The Corsican Brothers and the Miller and his Men were his favourites.

In 1988, his collection was exhibited at the National Theatre in London and, later, at the Museum of Childhood in Lancashire. Some of his toy theatres went to London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.
