Description

“Tuppenny” token machine, manufactured by B. Mathews & Co., London (S.E.16) and part of their well-known “Tulip Automatic” range.

Believed to be dating to around 1900–1915, this is a genuine early penny-in-the-slot amusement machine, originally used in pubs, clubs and early arcades to dispense tokens (“checks”) for games and entertainment.

⭐ Key Features
• ✔️ Fully working – correctly accepts coins and dispenseses tokens
• ✔️ Original “TULIP” hand-painted crest to top
• ✔️ Complete internal mechanical coin mechanism
• ✔️ Original token magazine (brass tube) present
• ✔️ Internal B. Mathews & Co. labels and markings intact
• ✔️ Includes a lock and key
• ✔️ Includes tokens shown (please see photos)

🏛️ Historical Interest

These machines were commonly leased to pubs and amusement venues, which is why the internal label states ownership by B. Mathews & Co. The wording referencing prizes and legal responsibility reflects early regulations around gaming and gambling in Britain.

A fantastic example of pre-electric British engineering, operating entirely via mechanical coin validation and release.
