Job Title: Consultant PsychiatristService Line: Male Low SecureProfessionally Accountable to: Medical DirectorManagerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager We are seeking an experienced part-time / any 3 days per week Forensic Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone and provide senior medical cover on Saltwood Ward, our 16 bed low secure service for men with enduring mental illness, including those with a personality disorder.
The post holder will work alongside another part-time Responsible Clinician on the ward, sharing clinical and MDT leadership responsibilities on the ward. This will include maintaining the care of inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward, ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.
Saltwood Ward provides a 16 bed low secure service for men with enduring mental illness, including those with a personality disorder at our hospital in Kent, Cygnet Hospital Maidstone.
Our male high dependency inpatient rehabilitation service, Kingswood Ward at Cygnet Hospital Maidstone, provides a pathway for men from Saltwood Ward requiring a stepdown to a lower level of security.
The multidisciplinary team is integrated and work as one, sharing expertise. The Trust also has extensive community links which can be particularly helpful for service users moving towards discharge, thus helping to keep lengths of stay to a minimum.
In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

Main duties and Responsibilities
The post holder will work alongside another part-time Responsible Clinician on the ward, sharing clinical and MDT leadership responsibilities on the ward. Lead on the provision of high quality care to the service users admitted to Saltwood WardAct as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary teamAssess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service usersUndertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis & treatmentConduct ward rounds, patient reviews & clinical auditsLead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management & embed clinical governance within the serviceSupervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals & managers' hearings & attend hearingsLiaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as requiredGood maintenance of patient recordsTo ensure and maintain regular communications with the Site Medical Director and Hospital ManagerTo communicate effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors, and any other concerned bodies; maintaining appropriate reports. Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC StatusExperienced & knowledgeable in Forensic PsychiatryKnowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, along with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of CapacityA first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notesCommitted to continued professional developmentAble to work as part of a multi-disciplinary teamA member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent Cygnet have been providing a national network of high-quality specialist mental health services for more than 30 years.
