The Harley-Davidson Sportster was launched in 1957 and it was sporty, by Harley standards. The XLCH Sportster of the 1970s formed the basis for an even sportier development, the XLCR, which was produced from 1977 to 1979 and was perhaps one of history’s most misunderstood bikes. It didn’t help that ‘CR’ stood for café racer, when it certainly was not one. In fact, it was a pretty effective attempt at marrying a traditional 1,000cc Harley V-twin with a European-style frame, but buyers, and even Harley’s own dealers, failed to appreciate that, hence just 3,133 were produced. Enthusiasts now recognise it as a bike which is at home both on American and European roads, and it is sought-after for its rarity.

This rare XLCR was sold new in Britain and registered in Norwich in April, 1979. It was purchased by the late owner in 2015 because it represented something unusual for his collection. B
