A SERIOUS WARNING TO ANYONE CONSIDERING USING THIS COMPANY
We hired James Casey / Nova Roofing & Building Ltd to carry out substantial landscaping work at our home. We chose him because he appeared knowledgeable and professional. His quote was slightly higher than others we had received, but we felt he was the right person for the job and trusted his advice.
With hindsight, there were a number of red flags that we simply did not recognise at the time.
The landscaping work started, and on the second day James told us that he had discovered serious issues with damp on our internal and external walls, as well as other issues with our roof. None of these matters had formed part of the work we had originally asked him to assess or carry out.
James repeatedly used phrases such as, “I know money doesn't grow on trees”, while telling us that if we wanted to cancel, he would refund our money. At the same time, we were put under considerable time pressure and repeatedly told that the landscaping could not be completed unless we agreed to the additional works, as he could not provide a guarantee and had a business reputation to uphold.
The additional quotations were substantial, amounting to more than £22,000.
We subsequently had two independent qualified damp specialists inspect the property. Both told us that the damp works being proposed were not the appropriate treatment for the conditions they observed and would not address the existing issues. They also confirmed that there was no reason for these matters to prevent the landscaping work from being completed, as the two were not dependent on each other.
We therefore cancelled the contract.
This is where our experience became particularly concerning.
Despite having repeatedly been told that we could cancel and receive our money back, the response changed once we actually did so.
The work was left without what we considered to be reasonable care, including large open trenches, a broken downpipe and a broken drain cover. The garden was left unusable and, in our view, presented a safety concern. Building rubble and dirt were also left on the public highway.
We subsequently had to pay a further £500 to have the waste removed after James refused to accept liability, despite the company retaining a substantial amount of our money.
We have now had to take formal steps to try to recover the money owed to us. £10,000 remains with the company, despite our attempts to resolve the matter through mediation. A formal Letter of Claim has been sent, and Nova Roofing & Building Ltd is currently refusing to provide a refund.
The company is relatively new. Companies House records show that Nova Roofing & Building Ltd was incorporated in September 2024 and previously traded under the name JTS Contractors Ltd, which was also only operating for a relatively short period.
We are posting this review because we genuinely wish we had seen a review like this before hiring Nova Roofing & Building Ltd.
This review reflects our own experience and the evidence we have relating to our contract. We are not suggesting that everyone will have the same experience, but we believe prospective customers deserve to know what happened to us before deciding whether to use this company.
OUR ADVICE: Do your own independent checks and do not rely solely on a contractor's assessment when additional work suddenly becomes “essential” after the original job has started. Be cautious about making additional payments, obtain independent professional opinions where appropriate, and carefully verify reviews and references for previous work.
