Handcrafted Celtic Chess Set, complete with all playing pieces and rules
Avoch, Highland
£50
Description
This is a challenging game for two players based on a board in the National History Museum in Dublin believed to date back to the 9th century. A similar game was played by Vikings and known as Hnefatafl. If you are lucky enough to visit the Viking Museum in Roskilde near Copenhagen you will see a similar game with pieces on display. Did the Vikings bring it to Ireland or did they learn it from the Irish?
It is a game of unequal sides whereby the 12 attackers (pale colour) try to capture the King with his 8 defenders (dark colour). The rules of the game are included.
The board and playing pieces are all hand crafted in Ireland from limestone. Note the exquisite detail on the board and each of the playing pieces.
Comes in its original box.
