Description

Step into a senior role where your building physics expertise directly shapes low-energy, low-carbon buildings from concept to operation. This is a chance to lead technically challenging projects, influence design decisions, and drive best practice in performance-led design within a collaborative, forward-thinking team.

About the Role:

As Senior Building Physics Engineer, you will lead advanced building performance analysis across a range of complex projects, from early-stage feasibility through to detailed design and post-occupancy evaluation. You will be the go-to specialist for energy, thermal comfort and carbon modelling, guiding design teams and clients towards compliant, efficient and resilient solutions. Your work will underpin planning, certification and whole-life carbon strategies, ensuring robust, evidence-based outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead advanced building energy modelling using tools such as IES-VE and/or EnergyPlus across multiple projects.

Develop, run and interpret dynamic thermal and overheating assessments in line with Part O and TM54 methodologies.

Produce compliance calculations, reports and evidence for Part L and related UK Building Regulations.

Undertake whole life carbon assessments using platforms such as One Click LCA, informing design optimisation and carbon reduction strategies.

Manage and deliver BREEAM assessments, coordinating inputs from design teams and preparing high-quality submissions.

Provide clear technical guidance to architects, engineers and clients, presenting complex analysis in a concise, non-technical manner.

Lead performance-led design reviews, challenging and refining design proposals based on modelling insights.

Mentor junior team members in building physics methods, tools and best practice, supporting their technical development.

Key Requirements:

Significant experience in building physics or building performance engineering, ideally in a consultancy environment.

Advanced proficiency in dynamic building energy modelling using IES-VE and/or EnergyPlus on complex, multi-discipline projects.

Proven track record delivering Part L compliance and detailed thermal/overheating assessments in line with UK guidance (including TM54).

Strong understanding of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance and current industry standards for energy, comfort and ventilation.

Demonstrable experience preparing clear, technical reports and presenting modelling outcomes to design teams and clients.

Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise workloads and deliver to agreed deadlines with minimal supervision.

Strong stakeholder coordination skills, working closely with architects, MEP engineers and sustainability specialists.

Desirable Skills:

Experience leading or supporting BREEAM assessments, including evidence collation and submission.

Practical experience using One Click LCA or similar tools for whole life carbon and embodied carbon analysis.

Familiarity with other certification frameworks (e.g. LEED, WELL, NABERS) and performance rating schemes.

Experience with parametric analysis workflows and/or scripting to streamline modelling processes.

Knowledge of post-occupancy evaluation, in-use performance verification and closing the performance gap.

Qualifications:

Degree in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Physics, Sustainability or a closely related discipline.

Postgraduate qualification in building physics, energy systems, sustainability or similar (preferred).

Chartered or working towards Chartered status with CIBSE, IMechE or equivalent professional body (preferred).

Certified BREEAM Assessor status or a clear path towards accreditation (desirable).

If you are ready to take a lead role in delivering high-performance, low-carbon buildings and want to deepen your impact as a senior specialist, we d like to hear from you.
