Description

Job Specification: Field Service Engineer (FSE)

Location: UK-wide and International Travel

Salary: Up to 50,000 per annum

Hours: 40 hours basic per week, with flexibility to work up to 60 hours

Working Pattern: Days

Sector: Packaging Machinery / End-of-Line Automation

The Opportunity

We are looking for a motivated and technically capable Field Service Engineer to join a growing engineering team specialising in end-of-line packaging machinery and automation systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a background in packaging machinery, ideally with at least one year of experience following completion of an apprenticeship. The successful candidate will be responsible for installing, servicing, maintaining and fault-finding on a range of automated packaging equipment at customer sites across the UK and internationally.

You will join an established team of six engineers, benefiting from hands-on training, support from experienced colleagues and the opportunity to develop your technical skills within a growing business.

Key Responsibilities

Install, commission and maintain end-of-line packaging machinery at customer sites.

Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical and automation-related faults.

Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive service visits.

Support the installation and commissioning of new equipment and systems.

Work on a variety of packaging machinery, including palletisers, robots, cartoners, shrink wrappers and flow wrappers.

Provide technical support to customers and ensure equipment operates efficiently and reliably.

Complete service reports and relevant technical documentation.

Work collaboratively with other field engineers and project managers to deliver successful projects.

Travel throughout the UK and internationally as required.

Maintain high standards of health and safety, customer service and professionalism.

Equipment and Technical Experience

Experience with end-of-line packaging systems is highly desirable, particularly:

Palletising systems

Industrial robots and robotic automation

Cartoning machinery

Shrink-wrapping equipment

Flow-wrapping machinery

Automated packaging and production-line systems

Candidates with a broader packaging machinery background will also be considered.

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential:

Minimum NVQ Level 3 qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.

Practical engineering experience, ideally within the packaging machinery sector.

Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities.

A hands-on, proactive approach to engineering and customer support.

Willingness and flexibility to travel throughout the UK and internationally.

Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider engineering team.

Desirable:

At least one year of post-apprenticeship engineering experience.

Experience working with end-of-line packaging machinery and automation systems.

Knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering principles.

Experience with robotic systems, machine installation or commissioning.

A full UK driving licence.

Training and Development

You will receive ongoing support and training from experienced field engineers and the Project Manager. Initial development will include shadowing colleagues, gaining practical experience on customer sites and building confidence across the company's range of packaging machinery.

The business is committed to developing its engineers and providing opportunities to expand technical knowledge and take on greater responsibility.

Career Progression

As the business continues to grow, there is scope for progression into Senior Engineer, Supervisory or other leadership roles for individuals who demonstrate strong technical ability, reliability and leadership potential.

Department Structure

You will join a team of six engineers, working closely with fellow Field Service Engineers and the Project Manager.

The team operates collaboratively, sharing technical knowledge and supporting one another to deliver effective customer solutions.

Reason for Vacancy

This position has arisen due to business growth, offering the successful candidate the opportunity to join an expanding engineering operation.

Salary and Benefits

Salary: Up to 50,000 per annum, depending on experience.

Company car: Provided.

Additional holiday: Up to five extra days for working weekends, subject to the company's policy.

Overtime: No separate overtime or shift allowance; the role is salaried.

Working hours: 40 hours per week, with the flexibility to work up to 60 hours depending on business and customer requirements.

Working pattern: Day-based, with UK-wide and international travel.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic engineer looking to build a long-term career in packaging machinery and automation. They will be comfortable working at customer sites, enjoy diagnosing technical problems and be keen to learn from experienced engineers.

This role would particularly suit someone who has recently completed an engineering apprenticeship and gained around a year of additional industry experience, or an established Field Service Engineer looking to join a growing business with clear opportunities for career development.
