Description
• Color: The translucent "tea-colored" to deep chocolate-brown hue is the hallmark of smoky quartz. This color is caused by natural radiation (from surrounding rocks in the earth) interacting with aluminum impurities within the silicon dioxide (\bm{SiO_2}).
• Crystal Habit: You can clearly see the hexagonal (six-sided) prisms ending in pointed terminations. This is the classic growth pattern of the quartz family.
• Striations: If you look closely at the long faces of the crystals, you’ll see horizontal grooves or "striations." These are a primary diagnostic feature of quartz.
• Luster: It has a vitreous (glassy) luster, meaning it reflects light much like a piece of polished glass.
