Antique Singer sewing machine treadle base repurposed into table
Balerno, Edinburgh
£300
Description
Own a piece of history with this antique Singer sewing machine treadle base, complete with a reclaimed wooden top used to form a lovely, industrial-style table.
From research into the serial number, the cast iron treadle base was most likely produced in or around 1904 by The Singer Manufacturing Company at their factory in Kilbowie, Clydebank, Scotland.
The base is very solidly made and in good condition. A Pitman rod links the working foot pedal to the pinwheel. The front belt guard and loop, as well as the rear belt guide, are also still in place from the time when this would have had a sewing machine attached to the top.
Nice details include the SINGER logo at the centre bracket of the base, as well as Singer insignia on either side, both painted in gold.
The base was stripped and repainted some years ago, but has some cosmetic marks and wear consistent with age which, I think, add to its authenticity and charm.
The wooden top is salvaged wood which I believe to be pine. It was previously used as a map pinboard, resulting in the tiny holes and marks you will see in the pictures. As the base is well over 100 years old, I wanted the top to be more in keeping with its age than a new bit of wood and to provide a more vintage feel. The wood has been sanded and several coats of oil have been applied to the surface and sides. The underside remains in its original condition.
Please see below for approximate measurements:
Height: 73cm
Width: 79cm
Depth: 59cm
Thickness of wood: 1.5cm
This is a sturdy, fairly heavy, piece and would look great in any setting!
