Description

Mid-Century full size 4/4 Czech Workshop Cello – Luby / Cremona Factory – Beautiful Flamed Maple – Very Recently Professionally Restored by Luthier (May 2026) £2450ono.

Video available.

Anyone wishing to see a video of the cello being played please just let me know and I can send a video via WhatsApp.

A wonderfully resonant and visually striking older Czech cello from the renowned Luby (formerly Schönbach) violin-making tradition, labelled:

“Teatra by Rosetti – Stradivarius Model – Made at the Cremona Factory, Luby, Czechoslovakia”

This is a mature mid-20th-century European workshop instrument with a rich, warm and powerful tone that far exceeds many modern student cellos.

The cello has recently undergone extensive professional luthier work and is now in excellent playing condition so it is all set up to play. Work includes:

• Professional neck repair/reset at the heel
• Pegbox rebushed/refitted
• Pegs turning smoothly and holding perfectly
• Endpin professionally straightened/aligned
• Structurally checked and professionally set up
• Excellent playability and response

The tone is the real highlight — warm, open and responsive with impressive depth, projection and maturity. It has the kind of characterful sound older Czech instruments are known for and is a genuinely inspiring cello to play.

Visually it is also a particularly attractive example, with gorgeous heavily flamed maple across the back and ribs together with a lovely warm Central European varnish.

This instrument would suit:

• Advancing students looking to move beyond an entry-level cello
• Serious adult amateurs

• Conservatoire or youth orchestra players

• Folk, chamber or orchestral musicians

• Anyone wanting a mature European instrument with real tonal character rather than a newer factory-made student cello

Condition:

Very good overall condition for age with only honest cosmetic wear and marks consistent with a well-cared-for vintage instrument.
There is a very fine hairline line visible in the outer veneer layer near the soundpost area on the back. The cello has been professionally inspected by a luthier who confirmed this is confined to the outer veneer layer only and does not extend into the underlying laminated structure beneath. As the back of the cello is a laminated/veneered construction rather than a fully carved solid back, it is not considered comparable to a traditional structural soundpost crack in a carved cello back and presents no structural concern or issue affecting tone, stability or playability.

Comparable professionally set-up European workshop cellos of this quality are often retailed through specialist string shops at considerably higher prices, particularly once restoration, setup work and warranty are taken into account.

So this is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuinely musical older European cello with professional restoration already completed.

Viewing and playing welcome in NE8, Tyne and Wear, close to the Tyne Bridge. I’m home most days.
