Personal Assistants /Home Carers required for active, outgoing disabled woman with a teenage son.

I currently have a lovely team of people that support me 24 hours a day, who cover shifts throughout the week. I am looking for 2 people to join our team of Personal Assistants (PAs). I live in the Southville area of Bristol.

As I have a progressive muscle weakening condition I currently use an electric wheelchair and need a lot of support. I have a lovely 17 year old son, a small sweet dog and my parents live nearby.

This role involves; Helping me throughout the day and sometimes at night. Personal Assistants have their own private room in my house where they sleep. During the day tasks include getting out of bed, positioning of my body, assisting with personal care, medication and equipment, helping me get up, showered and dressed, plus assisting with getting things ready for mealtimes for me and my son. I also now use a portable ventilator to support my breathing and so PAs also help me put my mask on and adjust it throughout the day.

Household tasks are required such as washing up, laundry, shopping, cooking, cleaning, plus supporting me with eating and drinking throughout the day, dog walking, driving to appointments, supporting me to do the things I enjoy such as meeting up with friends for coffees, cinema and theatre going, visiting my family’s allotment and walks around Bristol including lovely Ashton Court!

The rota is on a four week cycle and each shift is 24.5 hours long starting at 9am and finishing at 9:30am the following morning.

I currently have 8 x 24.5hr shifts per 4 weeks available and plan to recruit 2 new people to cover these between them. I.e. 4 shifts each.

Here is a proposed idea of how these shifts could be divided (however this could be flexible depending on the individuals recruited):

Person A

Week 1 – Friday

Week 2 – No shifts

Week 3 – Saturday

Week 4 – Monday & Friday

Person B

Week 1 – Wednesday

Week 2 – Monday

Week 3 – Sunday

Week 4 – Sunday

Members of my current team enjoy this aspect of the job as working a 24 hour chunk of time affords a large amount of flexibility in the remainder of their week.

There are also times when cover is required for other PAs due to holiday / sickness, so sometimes other overnight and daytime cover is also required.

I currently have a team of 8 and changes throughout the year sometimes occur. This might provide some opportunities to increase hours in the future.

I am looking for friendly, flexible and committed people who have great communication skills, good energy and are happy to work on their own initiative. Due to the personal care involved and intimate nature of this role, I am looking to employ female PAs. Experience is not essential but a driving license is preferred.
