Description
VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 2 CAMPERVAN 1979
Late Bay Window Campervan, yellow, 2000cc engine (Type 4), twin carbs, petrol, right hand drive. 43 000 miles, 5000 with me. Tax & MOT exempt. First registered November 1979. Running. Could be ready for summer camping/surf trips!
This lovely van has been in the family since 2018 and I purchased it from my brother in law in 2023. It’s been my only vehicle for nearly 3 years for weekly commutes, surf trips and camping trips in Wales, Devon & Cornwall as well as my own room in the middle of Glastonbury festival 2024! Mechanically reliable the whole time. Full service history MOT and SORN certificates dating back to 1998. The engine is reconditioned and fitted around 2009 with 10 000 on the clock. Two sets of keys, it uses the same key for all doors and ignition. As the latest type 2 model produced the breaks and bumpers were better quality than in previous models. It had a new gearbox installed in 2020.
Since purchase in summer 2023 I’ve installed a new Bosch battery, replaced all tyres and had a service replacing the fuel tank sender unit, front brake discs and pads, fuel hose, all fuel lines and filter, clips and t-piece and driver side window lifter channel. A previous issue with gear selection was resolved by tightening the linkage - it was tricky finding gears before but now very easy to drive. I’ve also replaced the wiper blades, indicator relay and had another mechanic replace the distributor cap, rotary arm, leads and plugs.
Mechanical Issues - The van has been very reliable the whole time I’ve had it, however since August last year there's occasionally been some hesitation when accelerating in the lower gears while the engine is sill cold. A mechanic found that it's low in compression in one cylinder while replacing the plugs and leads. There are also oil leaks which is to be expected in something of this age. I have videos of the engine running taken early December.
Bodywork Issues - The bodywork is generally very good with some rusting around the window edges as expected in a vehicle this old. I began sanding and treating the rusting around the windscreen with Fertan rust convertor and had planned to fill these areas with metal putty to prevent leaks. There is a crack on the back left panel above the wheel arch (see photo) however besides some minor scuffs on the same side there are no other issues. When serviced the mechanic noted “some corrosion inner front crossmember” but the underneath is in good condition besides.
The interior could have some panels updated but it’s ready to use as is with rock & roll bed, gas hob, sink & cupboards. I profiled, cut & finished some new plywood shelves to replace the MDF ones at the back which are ready to install if wanted. I also cut a new table top for the removable central table post. The pop up roof and pull out hammock are easy to use. The fridge needs replacing but after some research I found out that it could just need the ammonia shaken up which I didn't get round to trying. Currently no leisure battery is installed which is needed for the plug sockets and sink pump however there is a cable and socket to connect to the mains power at camp sites or at home.
I purchased a clutch claw security system (see photo) designed specifically for this type of van, and a Haynes manual. It has a large awning that acts as a side tent which I haven’t used however my sister’s family have. I purchased a simpler to use brand new 2m x 2.6m blue awning instead from Heritage Parts (Product Number AC898003)
I absolutely love this van and the trips I’ve taken both solo and with my family have been amazing. I am reluctantly selling as we are looking to purchase a house and so all of my time and funds need to be prioritised there rather than investigating the hesitation issue but I had planned to get it into peak condition before that decision was made. It would suit someone happy to invest some time and funds into doing so and the price reflects this. With a little love and attention it could easily be ready for spring and summer camping/surf trips. Please get in touch if you'd like to view and test drive!
