Description

For sale is my 1996 VW T4 LWB camper. The long‑wheelbase versions of these vans are hard to come by, and the extra interior space makes a huge difference for camping and comfort. It’s running the excellent 2.4D 5‑cylinder engine, one of the most reliable setups for a T4. With no turbo, you avoid the common issues found on the 2.5 models.

This van has low mileage for its age, currently at 146,470, and I don’t expect this to increase as I’m not using it. It’s a manual diesel with nearly a year’s MOT. Over the years I’ve spent a significant amount maintaining it, including welding whenever needed. As with all T4s, rust is part of the ownership experience — there is some cosmetic rust around the lower trim, but nothing structural following the recent MOT. A few advisories were noted, as expected, but nothing serious.

I bought the van around six years ago when the conversion was halfway done and completed the rest myself. It’s had a lot of work and upgrades, and I’ll list the main features below.

Outside:

• Large black wheels with low‑profile tyres
• Roof rack
• Updated large air horn

Inside:

• Kiravans swivel bench seat
• BT stereo
• Split‑charge relay for the leisure batteries
• Rock‑and‑roll bed with storage underneath
• Sink with water pump
• Gas hobs
• Two leisure batteries powering the 12V circuit (no inverter)
• USB port for charging devices and powering ceiling lights
• Three 12V cigarette lighter sockets in the rear (fridge, accessories, or solar panel input)
• Kitchen cupboard
• Large bespoke wardrobe
• Various additional storage compartments

I’ve done so much to this van over the years that it’s hard to list everything, but I have a large folder of receipts. Recent mechanical work includes:

• New exhaust
• All five glow plugs replaced
• Starter motor
• Battery
• Clutch

These repairs mean the van starts quickly and reliably — genuinely faster than some modern vehicles I own. There’s plenty of paperwork, though limited service history due to age. I’ve serviced it myself regularly as it’s easy and far more affordable.

These T4s are great vans: mechanically tough, simple to work on, and full of character. The conversion is tidy and ready for adventures. It’s not a fast vehicle, but it’s one that will run all day. As with any VW of this age, expect some ongoing tinkering and the usual rust spots — it’s part of the charm. This camper would suit someone who knows a bit about vehicles or someone younger who wants to learn, just like I did.

I’m selling because I’m no longer using it for the camping trips it deserves. Ideally it goes to someone who will drive it regularly, as these engines thrive on being used.

Feel free to ask any questions — it’s a unique van and I’m sure I’ve missed something.
