Lovely Talbot Express Campervan

Selling a wonderful van that has done us well including a big trip through Europe in 2023.

It’s a 1994 Talbot Express, Diesel 1905 cc. It has done 104,089 miles.

It looks great inside and we worked hard on the interior including colourful curtains, orange seat covers, a wooden floor and a space saving contraption to make the bed easier to install, doing away with the annoying and cumbersome slats you usually need to bring. A joy to spend time in. It looks and feels so much better than the usual tired, old, dirty brown interiors of most other Talbots being sold.

It’s been great fun to go away in, spend time in and drive.

It does need some work but I thought I’d list it and see if someone fancies taking it on and getting it for a much better price than I’d otherwise be selling for. I'm going to be fully transparent and list all the issues I know about.

To get through the MOT, I’ve been told by my mechanic work includes:

- Drive shaft gaiter
- Front wheel bearing
- Lots of welding in the sills (seatbelt anchorage corroded)
- Wipers (parts purchased for repair)

*Not guaranteeing this is everything, but this is what I've been told by a trusted mechanic. Do use the reg and check the MOT history.

The Good:

- Lovely Interior
- Working Hobs
- Working Oven
- Working Fridge
- Lots of storage
- Toilet area
- Awning
- Breakdown kit
- Wheel lock / security device included
- Exhaust replaced in last few years
- Fuel tank replaced in last few years
- Cam belt replaced in last few years

The Work:

- Welding
- New water tank / pipe needed as there is rust in there
- New leisure battery needed
- Windscreen wipers not working (new wipers and motor purchased ready for repair)
- Rust holes under windscreen (see photo)
- Small dent rear left (see photo)
- Water staining on one section of ceiling (see photo)
- Skylight plastic degraded, DIY repair undertaken to stop leaking. Replacement skylights available online
- Speakers not working
- Interior heating / cooling fans not working properly. Seem to blow cold in winter, hot in summer. There is a decent plug in fan for summer

Glow Plugs:

This gets its own section.

The van had some trouble starting in the cold in the mountains and we were told it was an issue with the glow plugs. We replaced one but the others were seized and it’s very risky to remove them - if they shatter it leads to much bigger, much more expensive problems so the specialist we used advised us to leave them.

Since changing the one glow plug, the van has started in the middle of winter in the UK. With a bit of warming up and predominantly spring / summer usage for most trips, I think it’s something that can be worked around. I wanted to note this for full transparency as it’s an issue I spent a long time trying to solve.
