Description
For sale is our beautiful Laika Motorhome. It’s generously equipped as per spec below and also comes with circa 8k of fitted extras.
First registered in March 2003 and has covered 71k miles. It’s based on an Iveco chassis with the later/upgraded 35c15 146hp 2.8JTD engine (not to be confused with the 35c13 engine that was also available on these - this one is a big step up and so much nicer to drive) mated to a 6 speed manual, which is both powerful and relatively economical returning upwards of 30mpg on a run. Being twin wheeled at the rear and rear wheel drive it’s very stable on the road and of course gives you that generous payload of just under a ton. The rear wheel drive also allows a much better turning circle making it fairly easy to manoeuvre.
6 berth with 5 seatbelts in total.
Great spec to include;
Cruise Control
Electric windows
Electric/heated mirrors
Aux heating in rear which runs off the engine and keeps the rear passenger’s toasty during winter getaways
Switchable speakers in rear connected to main sound system
Electric skylight in overhead bed for star gazing
Extras fitted;
- Twin rear facing cameras (making parking a breeze)
- Towbar with electrics and bumper protection bar
- Refillable gaslow system fitted, twin bottle system with external filling point. Also fitted with upgrade Duo Control Crash Sensor which allows the gas to be used whilst in transit if needed
- Large solar panel with smart charger and usb’s for charging phones etc whilst off grid and of course keeping the leisure batteries topped up (we recently managed a week with no drop off whilst running lights, night fans, charging phones/ipads and running tv)
- Thatcham approved Vanbitz Strikeback alarm/immobilizer fitted, as well as a separate kill switch.
- DRL’s fitted
- Large awning with safari room that attaches
- Custom made silver screens for front cab
- Full retrim at Regal Furnishings in Herringbone with a grey piping. All rear seat foams were binned and replaced with new high density 'comfort' foam at the same time with extra padding at the legs and on the front seats, making them way more comfortable than the standard set up. This has made the front seats in particular more comfortable for longer journeys as you're not just sat in what seems like a standard van seat. I recently done Paris to Glasgow in a day - not something I think I would've managed on the original seats. Side curtains and carpet renewed at the same time. This really lifts the interior for a modern and very comfy feel.
- Extra USB’s fitted throughout and also soft LED’s for a more modern (and energy efficient) feel inside
We’ve had some great winter & summer trips in her both here and on the continent where we are mostly off grid – the water and waste tanks are huge giving great flexibility for wild camping. The toilet is a marine system which is a game changer for the wild stuff as the holding tank is several times larger than any cassette, although also comes with a cassette option too should you wish. Tanks are washed out and sterilised after each trip.
Beds front and rear are fixed and large (with great head room too, particularly at the front which is rare) and extremely comfy, diner also converts into a double. Washroom to include separate shower with screen (so the only bit that gets wet is the shower enclosure) which is of a decent size, toilet and sink. Large fridge freezer with oven above.
The storage is what sets this motorhome apart - it's massive. Double floored up to the back axle with full-width underfloor compartment accessible from both sides (with plug fitted for power) measuring around 7ft across - ideal for skis, chairs, safari rooms, etc.
There is also a large garage at the rear with blown heating and smart internal lights (work off a PIR and switch on as soon as any of the 3 garage entrances are opened) measuring 7ft across x 4.5ft wide x 4.2ft tall, this has been plated and shelved and comes with a ramp for motorbike/scooters. We found this great from a security perspective as our bikes weren't outside on a bike rack. Handily this is also accessible from the inside, which is great for grabbing/storing stuff without having to go outside.
Van measures 7.1m long and is plated at 4200kg. The unladen weight is 3300kg, giving you a decent payload of 900kg - C1 required.
Fully winterised with inboard frost proof water tanks, making for a great year round tourer.
Being part of the Hymer group, the build quality on Laika’s really is impressive with solid wood fit and finishings.
She comes with several folders of paperwork to include service history, habitation checks, original purchase receipt and manuals for everything. She had a major service 3k miles ago with fully synthetic oil to include gearbox oil change. Also professionally undersealed to keep her good for years to come. Last year I had the Timing and Aux belts redone, coolant drained/refreshed, rear diff oil redone and 6 x new Michelin Agilis Cross Climate tyres fitted – these are proper weight rated 10 ply tyres and were the best I could get my hands on. They've given great confidence during some of our winter getaways and also found them grippy for getting off sandy park ups/pitches. They also have the 3 peaks symbol meaning they are suitable for European countries in the winter months where Winter tyres are mandatory.
Well looked after with receipts totalling around 15k in maintenance and replacement parts over the years to include new turbo, prop bearing, 2 x diff oil changes, 2 x timing belt changes (30k miles & 65k miles).
Murray Caravans have looked after her for me in terms of habitation works and checks with no expense spared. Jobs carried out by them include;
- New/upgraded high pressure water pump - being 45psi instead of the usual 30 psi this gives great pressure, particularly for showers.
- New water module in bathroom
- New/upgraded Duo Control Crash Sensor which allows the gas to be used whilst in transit if needed
- New step mechanism/switch
- Lights in the rear bed area changed to dimmable led’s with a usb port for charging ipads etc; the kids love these, and of course with no heat generated they’re a lot safer
- Hab check with any associated works, last one completed end of last year - the engineer praised the condition of the van.
- I also had them replace/renew all seals on the exterior of the van to include the roof, windows and doors, meaning these should be good for years to come - the originals were beginning to look tired and I’m a firm believer in preventative maintenance.
It’s been a well loved motorhome that’s in good condition inside and out - there are a few marks/scratches to the paintwork that have been touched in as shown in pics, given the body is aluminium these haven’t given any issue. The front bumper also has some chips with paint flake in places commensurate with age and mileage. It has a fairly clean Mot history with no structural corrosion or welding (unlike many out there).
Doesn’t smoke or use oil. It's had all the major jobs done along with lots of preventative maintenance, ensuring trouble free motoring and is ready to go on holiday.
It’s already Crit Air registered for France with the relevant sticker on the windscreen if you plan on heading that way. Being on the cusp size-wise, we were able to get through tolls as a ‘Camping Car class 2’ which was almost half the price in most cases. Cheaper Road tax too at £165 for the year
Only offered for sale as I fancy trying an A class. I’m not in any rush to sell, nor am I desperate to.
There is an upgraded sound system installed that I was planning on having fitted to my new Camper but is available by separate negotiation should you wish. This includes an upgraded Alpine Head unit, Andriod/Apple CarPlay unit with dashcam, extra speakers and an active Sub with built in Amp fitted - this sounds incredible over any standard set up. Internal camera also fitted meaning you can keep an eye on kids/passengers by the flick of a switch whilst on the move.
The habitation history should give some comfort and evidence of a clean and damp free Camper.
Any inspection welcome
