The sky above the hill was bruised purple, and the house looked worse than she remembered—its windows black and hollow, its roof sagging like broken vertebrae. The front door hung half open, as if the house had been waiting for her.
Evelyn swallowed the bile rising in her throat.
She wasn’t here by choice.
Her brother’s final voicemail still echoed in her head:
“Don’t come upstairs. Don’t look at the mirror. It wants your name too.”
And then the scream.
