Description

Magnum 18

“The Magnum 18 is a lightweight, high-performance open-cockpit trimaran developed by VirusBoats as a compact successor to its earlier small trimaran designs. Measuring approximately 5.3–5.5 metres (18 feet) in length and weighing only about 200 kg, it was created as a fast yet accessible day-sailing boat for single-handed sailors, couples, and small families.

Unlike many traditional trimarans, the Magnum 18 dispenses with a cabin and keel, adopting a simple open layout with a central hull, retractable buoyant amas (outrigger floats), and trampoline areas that provide ample space for crew movement and relaxation. This design philosophy keeps weight low while maximizing performance and ease of handling.

The boat carries a rotating mast, fully battened mainsail, furling jib, gennaker and asymmetric spinnaker, giving it impressive acceleration and lively sailing characteristics. Because trimarans remain relatively level under sail compared with monohulls, the Magnum 18 can convert gusts directly into speed rather than excessive heel. Owners and reviewers often praise its responsiveness, stability, and ability to sail efficiently to windward.

A retractable centreboard allows shallow-water operation, beach launching, and easy trailering. The trimaran folds to a road-legal transport width, making it practical for sailors who store their boats at home and launch only when needed. A small outboard motor can also be fitted for manoeuvring or auxiliary propulsion.

Despite its sporting nature, the Magnum 18 is CE Category C rated and described as unsinkable, providing a reassuring level of safety for coastal sailing. The combination of speed, simplicity, low maintenance, and family-friendly space has made it one of VirusBoats' most popular small trimarans, appealing to sailors seeking multihull performance without the complexity or cost of a larger cruising trimaran.”

“Puffin Pie”
Scarce in the UK, this boat is in very, very good condition. Lightly used and well-cared for, washed down thoroughly after each use, dry-stored in winter, it has been maintained to the highest possible standard by its two owners from new. The sails are in very good order – in addition to the mainsail and jib, it has a spinnaker and gennaker in as new condition. The trailer has been well maintained with the boat rolling off for launch and retrieval with great ease. The retractable amas enable this boat to be stored in a boat park taking up little more beam space thana large dinghy. Easily sailed single-handed it performs even better with a crew – for the more adventurous crew there is the addition of a trapeze.

A radio set is included (not use for along time so it will need checking before use) and a recently serviced Suzuki 2.5hp outboard engine.

Currently located in a boat park at Buckler’s Hard on the Beaulieu River – viewing of this fine boat is to be recommended.
