When BMW unveiled the Z3 in 1995, it marked a confident return to the compact roadster market for the Munich marque, evoking memories of the much-loved 507 and Z1 while firmly embracing modern engineering. Built at BMW’s new Spartanburg facility in South Carolina, the Z3 combined classical long-bonnet, short-tail proportions with the marque’s hallmark straight-six performance and rear-wheel-drive balance. Its international profile was further boosted by a role in the James Bond film GoldenEye, ensuring instant recognition and desirability.

The 2.8-litre model represented the sweet spot of the range. Powered by BMW’s charismatic M52 inline six-cylinder engine, it offered a significant step up in performance over the four-cylinder cars, with abundant torque, a cultured exhaust note, and effortless long-distance capability. With near 200bhp on tap and finely judged chassis dynamics, the Z3 2.8 delivered the engaging driving experience for which BMW had long been renowned, while retaining the refinement and usability expected of a modern roadster.
