Description
Designed and assembled by St John’s Street Cycles (SJS) in Bridgewater. The Thorn brand specialise in rugged customised Tour and Audax bikes. They also sold Sterling MTBs with front suspension which could also be used as Tour bikes on rough terrain.
I love this bike but my age and stamina now demands a more relaxed electric bike.
Frame: Double-butted heat treated Thorn 858 tubing
Stand-over at mid top tube 780mm
Set up for 1.75 m (5’ 9”) cyclist with inside leg 810mm
Virtual top tube (Top of saddle stem to top of fork tube) 590mm
Mid saddle to grips 730mm
Gears: Rohloff Speedhub has 14 sequential, equally-spaced ratios totalling 525%, (a greater range than most single chainwheel derailleurs), on one twist grip. If you haven’t heard about them then search on the internet and be impressed. They are the Rolls Royce of cycle gears. Sealed hub with gears running in an oil bath.
Gear Maintenance - Oil change every 3000 miles!. That’s it!
Gear Ratios: 42 chainring and 16 teeth sprocket give a range of 19 to 100 (gear inches) on 26 inch wheels.
Bottom Bracket: Eccentric bottom bracket means no vulnerable chain tensioner hanging down, (all chain stretch adjustment is done by rotating the BB shell)
Rohloff external gear mechanism means:
One thumbscrew removal of gear change connection for easy wheel removal. Uninterrupted shifter cables with no cable stops and no bare cable for simplicity and durability.

Air suspension 100mm forks made for cross-country and trail riding
Rims: Mavic XC717
Brakes: Shimano Deore Hydraulic Disc
Grips: Ergon (reduced width right-hand for Rohloff twist grip gear selector).
Thorn bikes designed for Rohloff gears come with:
Double cable guides for the pull-pull cables which don’t rely on spring return technology. (All the gear indexing is done in the hub not the handlebar control requiring no re-adjustment)
Socketed vertical drop-outs
Multiple eyelets on frame for accessories.
Separate fixings for mudguard and rack so easy to install/remove either separately
