Life Models Wanted

Description

I am looking for sitters for private studio work in London. I paint from life, and I want people who understand that sitting is not performance, not vanity, and not background decoration, but a real part of the making of a picture.

The work is slow, direct, and unsentimental: preparatory drawings, tonal studies, and paintings for a series of ambitious projects in progress... touching on different themes, including biblical, mythological, allegorical, and studies of people as they are, not as they pretend to be. Some sessions are about form, some about expression, some simply about presence.

I am interested in the hidden engines of human behaviour... obsession, desire, power, relationships, the whole troubled business of being human. Character, not polish, matters more to me.

Presence, awkwardness, intelligence, reserve, warmth etc... all of these matter more than experience. I am drawn to people who are comfortable being themselves, who have something quietly individual about them, and who would bring something human and unforced to the studio.

If you can sit with patience and are prepared to be looked at honestly, you are likely to be useful to the work.

Sessions are usually 1–2 times a week, with breaks, tea, and a fair arrangement for time and travel. If you are interested, send two recent photographs, one portrait and one full-length, clothed, and a few words about yourself.

Keep it brief, but honest.
