Description
I'm an analogue photographer working on an ongoing series of portraits shot entirely on film.
I'm looking for people with interesting faces, lives, stories and backgrounds.
You don't need to be a model or have any experience in front of a camera. I'm interested in musicians, artists, performers, makers, outsiders, eccentrics, people with unusual professions or unconventional lives , but equally in seemingly ordinary people with a story to tell. Age, appearance and background aren't particularly important to me. Character is. This isn't a conventional portrait service. It's a collaboration between photographer and subject, and the photographs become part of my personal artistic work.
HOW IT WORKS
There is no sitting or session fee.
I provide my time, photography and film, and cover the cost of developing the work I choose to make.
Once the film has been processed, I'll spend some time going through the photographs and deciding which images I want to take further. If I decide to take one of your portraits into the darkroom and print it as part of the project, I’ll make a small handmade analogue print for you too, as a thank-you for being part of the work.
If a photograph particularly speaks to you and you'd like to own it, handmade analogue prints will be available to order in a range of sizes. High-resolution digital scans can also be arranged if you'd prefer to have the image digitally.
I particularly love making physical photographs something you can hold, put on your wall, give to a special person and hopefully still have many years from now. Prints can be made in different sizes, and framing can also be arranged.
There is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. You are giving me your time and allowing me to photograph you; I'm creating the work. That's the collaboration.
A NOTE ABOUT TIME
This project moves at the pace of analogue photography.
I don't work to a fixed delivery schedule. A photograph might emerge in a week, a month, or sometimes considerably later.
Film gets developed. Contact sheets get looked at. Photographs get put aside and revisited. Sometimes an image I initially overlook becomes the one I want to print.
The waiting is part of it:
If you're looking for photographs for a particular purpose and need them by a certain date, that's also possible, just mention it when you contact me and we can discuss a different arrangement.
WHO I'M LOOKING FOR
I'm interested in the person, not the "look"
Maybe you've lived an unusual life. Maybe you make music. Maybe you've spent thirty years doing the same obscure job. Maybe you're heavily tattooed, impeccably dressed, completely ordinary-looking or impossible to describe. Maybe you're 20. Maybe you're 90.
Or maybe there's simply something about you that would make an interesting photograph.
Because this is personal artistic work rather than a commissioned photoshoot, I won't necessarily be able to photograph everyone who gets in touch. I'll choose people according to the direction the project takes and the stories that catch my attention.
INTERESTED
Send me a message and tell me a little about yourself.
Nothing formal, I'd simply like to know who you are, what you do, what you're interested in, where life has taken you and why you feel like being photographed on film.
If possible, send a recent photograph too. It doesn't need to be professional at all, an ordinary picture is perfect.
And if you're a little nervous about being photographed, that's completely fine. You don't need to know how to pose or what to do in front of the camera. That's on me.
If something clicks, we'll arrange a time, meet, have a conversation and make some photographs.
Real people. Real stories. Made on film, without rushing ❤️
