WORLD WAR ONE WW1 TRENCH ART SHELL CASE PAIR, DEEPLY EMBOSSED WITH OLIVE BRANCHES & ALSACE 1918, MARKED TO THE BASE, MANUFACTURE DATE 1917 - H34cm - REDUCED!

Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

Part of our small collection of trench art, we got these at a Vide Grenier at Vix in the Burgundy region.
It’s an imposing and well decorated pair of brass trench art shell cases with fluted compressed bases and a deeply embossed design with olive branches and shields engraved ALSACE 1918.

The little I know about militaria is from the internet so I’m happy to be corrected but research indicates them to be American shell cases by New York Brake Company, NewYork, USA, who produced high explosive and gas shells. They were for use with a 75 mm French Field gun (De Campagne).
The number 17 on the base refers to the year of manufacture - 1917
They are marked to the base with numerous marks:
NYAB 75 DEC M 17 L792 & NYAB 75 DEC M 17 L922 (if I’m reading the figures the correct way) - see photos.

Now worn but still bright and very sound they make great pieces of WW1 Militaria and decorative items.

In very good vintage condition with wear, tarnishing and knocks to the fluted upper edges but no damage - please examine photos carefully for condition.
The brass is sound with some wear, tarnishing, and scratches - see photos.
The upper edges are a bit misshapen but still sound - see photos.
The interiors are worn and stained but sound.

Measure approximately:
34 cm tall,
10 cm diameter to the top, 8.5 cm to the base,
weigh about 2.4 kg in total.
