Description
Collection only, from near Elgin 8 miles on the A941 road to Rothes.
This is a large 5+ gallon stoneware flagon made by:
Murray & Co Glasgow stoneware jugs were produced by the Caledonian Pottery, a company with a long history in Glasgow, Scotland. The pottery was originally founded in 1800 and underwent several ownership changes before the Murray family took control in 1826. Under William F. Murray, the company traded as W. F. Murray & Co..
In 1872, the Caledonian Pottery moved to a new, larger factory in Rutherglen, a town east of Glasgow. During this time, Murray & Co. produced a variety of stoneware items, including Rockingham teapots, inkwells, and acid jars, and their products were sold throughout the UK and internationally.
The pottery went into liquidation in 1897 and was taken over by a jam manufacturer who primarily used it to produce jam jars. The pottery eventually closed in 1929.
This makes this flagon between 128 to 153 yrs old its in incredible condition considering its age and size.
