Selling our collections (hoards) of mostly French vintage items that have been acquired over many years until finally we have no room for more!

We got this at a vide maison in Troyes in the Champagne region some years ago and have used it variously as a decorative kitchenalia piece, log bucket, planter, umbrella stand and occasional champagne ice bucket.
It’s a genuine antique that had been in the owner’s family for many years, initially used for cooking and latterly as a planter.
A large, robust, hand made, copper lidded pan known as a Faitout (does everything) or Daubiere (used for cooking stews known as Daubes).
Distinctive in its shape it has two strong handles and in its early life was used to cook over and open fire - hence the attractive verdigris and soot patina.
Constructed with cramp seams, this was probably originally bespoke made for a chateau or similar.
A cramp seam is the join of the sheets of copper where it is sort of dovetailed together.
This is seamed to the side and the base - see photos.
The fact that it has this feature, along with the the irregular nature of the cuts, make it likely to be hand cut and date it to the early 1800s.
Late 1800s ones had regular machine cut cramp seams and by the early 1900s a different technique altogether was used.
Still watertight, but worn and probably not usable for cooking, it is beautifully aged now and makes a great planter or decorative piece of French kitchenalia, fireside accessory, log/kindling bucket, ice bucket etc…

In good sound antique condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents and knocks consistent with its age - please examine photos carefully for condition.
Currently showing an attractive soot stained verdigris copper finish combined with some high lighted copper rims, rivets and handles - I’m sure it would polish up if so required by someone preferred that look.
Solid and sound with no structural damage.
The copper is thick and strong.
The surfaces are sound with numerous scratches and dents - see photos.
The interior is in similar condition and verdigris stained.
The upper edge has a strong rolled rim along with a second rolled edge below it.
The handles are copper riveted and very strong.
The bottom is worn but sound.
NOTE: This appears to be currently watertight, I have filled it with water up to the handle rivets with no leaks apparent and there are no holes and no light is visible when it is upturned. That said I do not guarantee it to continue to be watertight.
The lid fits well but needs a little persuasion.
It has a sound brass knob handle.
I can find no maker’s mark but there is the number 1 underneath one handle.

35 cm tall to the top of the lid handle,
weighs about 4.2 kg.
