Antique 1846 Continental Bronze Tripod Cauldron / Grapen – IHS Christian Symbols – £999

A fascinating and highly decorative 19th-century bronze/brass tripod cauldron, dated 1846, believed to be of German or Continental European origin.

This type of vessel is traditionally known as a Grapen — a three-legged hearth or cooking vessel used across Germany and neighbouring parts of Europe.

This is a particularly impressive example, featuring:

* Prominent IHS Christogram with cross, an ancient Christian symbol strongly associated with Catholic tradition
* Elaborate second monogram, possibly representing the original owner or family
* Winged cherub/face decoration
* Ornate foliage and relief work
* Three decorative legs
* Original-style heavy iron carrying/hearth handle
* Clearly incorporated 1846 date

Similar dated bronze Grapen are known from Continental Europe, including examples decorated with IHS and personal monograms.

The cauldron was purchased from Canalbank Auction, Bonnybridge, in 2024 for approximately £450 plus commission. At the time of sale, the auctioneer stated that it had come to them with another item reportedly from a castle/estate clearance. This provenance is interesting but is oral and unverified, so no particular castle is being claimed.

A wonderful conversation piece with considerable presence — equally suitable for an antique collection, historic interior, large fireplace or unusual feature piece.
