Barovier and Toso, Mid Century Glass Cordonato D'oro Table Lamp, Murano, Italy.
Poole, Dorset
£500
Description
Stunning, Mid Century piece of vintage glass from the small islands of Murano, near Venice, Italy, a location renowned globally as the cradle of artistic glassmaking since the 13th century. Cordonato D'oro meaning 'golden rope or cord'.
Consists of clear and/or coloured glass decorated with gold leaf, in a rope-like, vertical ribbed pattern, fused within the glass at blowing stage.
This lamp dates from the Mid Century period, 1950's.
It belonged to a family member who had impeccable taste, well travelled and the house was full of tasteful, expensive items, she was always immaculately turned out, bit of a Joan Collins / Barbera Cartland character!
I always remember this lamp from visits to her house going right back to the mid 70's so I am confident this is a genuine, period piece of venetian glassware.
Murano glass is highly decorative and colourful by design which is what sets it apart from other glassware. It really is quite beautiful when the natural light shines through and is a testament to the skilled artists that created this stunning piece.
It had the original 2 core, twisted opaque plastic flex on it but I rewired it for safety reasons. It has the original light fitting on it.
It has no markings on which is not unusual, sometimes, but not always they were etch marked or signed from the early 1970's onwards, prior to this they came with a sticker made of paper or foil (depending on period) on the base saying, 'Murano, Italy' and a serial number but this, I expect, has long since come off.
The lamp is in excellent condition, no chips or cracks and stands at 45 cm tall minus shade. The colours are all just as vibrant as the day it was produced, a truly stunning piece of artisan glassware made by skilled craftsmen and artists.
