The Credit Controller will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the sales ledger and credit control function, ensuring customer receipts are accurately recorded, outstanding debts are actively managed and customer accounts are maintained effectively.

The role will work closely with customers and colleagues across the business to resolve account queries, maintain appropriate credit terms and support strong cash collection.

As part of the wider Finance team, the role will also provide general finance support and cover where required.

Support new customer credit checks and the setting or review of appropriate credit limits. Run and review the aged debtor report regularly, identifying overdue balances and required actions. Escalate significantly overdue accounts, payment concerns and potential bad debts to the Financial Controller. Build effective relationships with customers to encourage prompt payment whilst maintaining good commercial relationships. Work with colleagues across Sales, Customer Service and other areas of the business to resolve invoice and payment queries quickly. Daily Banking & Cash Allocation

Review customer receipts on a daily basis. Post daily customer receipts and banking transactions accurately to the accounting system. Allocate receipts against the appropriate customer invoices and accounts. Investigate unidentified, underpaid or overpaid receipts. Ensure customer accounts are kept accurate and up to date. Customer Statements & Account Management

Prepare and send customer statements, reminder letters on a regular basis. Respond to customer account and statement queries. Reconcile customer accounts where required and investigate outstanding differences. Ensure customer master data and credit control information is maintained accurately.

Wider Finance Support

Provide cover and support across the Finance team during holidays, absence and busy periods. Assist with general finance administration and transactional finance activities where required. Support month-end reporting relating to debtors, cash receipts and the sales ledger. Work collaboratively with other members of Finance to ensure deadlines are achieved. Contribute to improvements in finance processes, controls and ways of working. Skills & Experience

Previous experience in a Credit Control, Sales Ledger or Accounts Receivable role.

Confident chasing customers for overdue payments by both telephone and email.

Experience of allocating customer receipts and maintaining customer accounts.

Good understanding of aged debtors, payment terms and credit control processes.

Good Excel skills.

Experience working within a manufacturing, engineering or distribution environment.

Experience using Sage 200 or a similar accounting/ERP system.

Experience carrying out customer credit checks and monitoring credit limits.

Experience supporting month-end finance processes.

Personal Approach

We are looking for someone who is:

Proactive and comfortable taking ownership of the debtor ledger. Confident but professional when chasing outstanding debt. Organised and methodical. Commercially aware and able to balance debt collection with maintaining good customer relationships. Comfortable communicating issues rather than allowing overdue debts or queries to remain unresolved. Flexible and willing to support the wider Finance team when needed.
