As I enter my 8th year offering private tuition, I can confidently state that I have developed a robust programme of tuition where the students will reach their maximum potential. Furthermore, I have maintained a commitment to ensuring the learning environment is informal and relaxed as I believe this is an integral part to the students' academic success.
I strive to make the material interesting and my aim for the tutee is that my enthusiasm for learning is something we will both share as the lessons progress!
I have first-hand experience of all of the courses I tutor and have used my personal experience and methods to inform a method of tuition which is enjoyable, uplifting and effective in its ability to allow students to reach their full potential in pursuit of their dream careers.
A bit about me:
I have lived all my life in the Southside of Glasgow and am a graduate in aero-mechanical engineering student from Strathclyde (currently based in London working in the nuclear industry) who has been tutoring students in National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher STEM subjects since august 2019 when I first started university.
This job is extremely rewarding for me as it means I can share the same knowledge that allowed me to get 16 grade A's in high school only a few years ago.I believe my young age puts me at an advantage when it comes to offering tuition as it means I am able to relate to students and motivate them to work towards getting whatever grade they desire in their chosen subject.
I graduated from the University of Strathclyde with Distinction and I am looking forward to sharing my success criteria with students and helping building their confidence and abilities in STEM subjects. In my fourth year, I was awarded one of the top grades, 84%, in my individual project. My project dealt with simulating airflow over an iced aerofoil using CFD. I am always more than happy to discuss my work with any interested students and share my enthusiasm for all things aerospace with them!.
For the space enthusiasts out there I was lucky enough to be chosen from over 550 candidates across the whole of the country to attend a 10 day learning journey to NASA Johnson Space Center through the University of Strathclyde's Scottish Space School. This is a program which I am a great advocate for and always encourage any of the tutee's studying higher maths or physics to apply for.
My approach:
I am able to explain difficult concepts in a succinct, unique way that allows students to fully understand the content of the course.I don't believe that simply knowing how to put numbers into a formula is enough knowledge for students - I always strive to explain the meaning behind the numbers (mainly the case for physics and a bit of chemistry) as this means that in an exam they are able to think clearly and will be confident in their knowledge.
I primarily aim to increase the student’s confidence in their ability to tackle questions which are perceived to be more difficult as I find that there can be a mental block for students when they are presented with a challenging question but because their confidence isn’t there they instinctively decide that these marks are inaccessible to them and then they don’t attempt the question, I want my students to not be put off by questions which, upon first glance, seem more difficult. I will give my students a strategy which can be applied to a wide range of problems and this will help them break down these questions and subsequently gain top marks.
I am a huge proponent of the 'scaffolding' technique. This involves building solutions rather than me simply going through worked examples or leaving the students to do questions independently. I have found this approach allows students to feel more confident since its never the case a student knows 'nothing' and there is always a starting point from which we can branch off to answer the proposed question.
