When buying used items, thoroughly inspect them for any defects or damage before making a purchase. Ask the seller about the item's history and usage. For electronics, check if they power on and function correctly. For furniture, look for signs of wear and tear, such as scratches or stains. Always meet in a safe, public place and avoid sending money before seeing the item.
It is your responsibility to ensure that any goods you buy or sell comply with UK law. This includes product safety regulations, trading standards, and consumer rights. You must not sell counterfeit or illegal items. Be aware of your rights as a buyer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. Avoid sending money via bank transfer or other insecure methods before receiving the item. Never share personal or financial information with untrusted individuals. If possible, pay with cash upon collection of the item. Report any suspicious activity to Gumtree and the police.
When buying electrical items, check that they have a valid CE marking, indicating they meet European safety standards. Ask the seller if the item has been PAT tested (Portable Appliance Testing). If possible, test the item before buying to ensure it functions correctly. Be particularly cautious with older appliances and ensure they are safe to use.
Arrange to meet the seller in a safe, public place during daylight hours. If possible, bring a friend or family member with you. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Inspect the item thoroughly before handing over any money. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, leave the situation immediately.
