The 'stop' light is a mandatory stop fault warning light. When 'stop' appears on the car's dashboard, it alerts the driver that the vehicle cannot continue to be driven and must be stopped immediately to check for issues such as abnormal engine oil pressure, excessively high coolant temperature, or brake system malfunctions. It is best to contact a repair shop or 4S dealership for inspection and repairs. The 'stop' light usually illuminates simultaneously with other warning lights, such as low oil pressure, low brake fluid level, or excessively high coolant temperature. In such cases, the engine must be shut down immediately to prevent potential damage.

Low engine oil pressure can lead to inadequate lubrication, increased cylinder wear, and in severe cases, engine bearing seizure, causing the engine to fail. Conversely, excessively high oil pressure accelerates wear on the oil pump and results in excessive oil consumption.

High coolant temperature negatively impacts fuel efficiency and increases component wear. When the temperature exceeds 90°C, engine power decreases accordingly. Overheating can also cause issues such as engine knocking, cylinder scoring, head gasket damage, and component deformation.

Brake system failures can lead to sudden loss of braking, uneven braking, or brake shudder. If a brake system malfunction occurs, the vehicle must not be driven further and should be stopped immediately. Continuing to drive may result in traffic accidents.

From a driving instructor’s perspective, 'stop' is a command requiring immediate action. It means bringing the car to a full standstill, not just slowing down. At a stop sign, for example, you must halt completely behind the line, check for hazards, and proceed only when safe. Rolling through a stop is a common learner mistake and can lead to penalties.

The term 'stop' in automotive contexts typically refers to the act of bringing a vehicle to a complete halt, either by applying the brakes or through other means. However, it can also have specific meanings depending on the situation.

  1. In driving terms, 'stop' means ceasing all movement of the vehicle. This could be at traffic lights, junctions, or pedestrian crossings. Failing to stop at a red light or stop sign is a traffic offence.
  2. In engine diagnostics, a 'stop' warning light may indicate a critical issue requiring immediate attention, such as low oil pressure or overheating.
  3. Some modern cars feature 'stop-start' technology, where the engine automatically shuts off when stationary (e.g., at traffic lights) to save fuel and reduce emissions.

Understanding the context is key. If a dashboard warning says 'STOP', pull over safely and check the vehicle’s manual.
