69Black paw pads in cats are often harmless, caused by natural pigment changes or friction. However, infections or injuries require prompt treatment. If your cat walks normally with darkened pads, it's likely just melanin deposits. For suspected infections from abrasions, gently clean with diluted hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) 2-3 times daily. Apply a vet-approved antibacterial ointment and use an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking. Monitor for limping, swelling or discharge which indicate veterinary attention is needed. Most healthy cats develop darker pads with age due to natural wear and pigment distribution. Keep indoor surfaces smooth to minimise abrasive damage. Consult your vet if the blackened area appears inflamed, has an odour, or causes discomfort.
