Light surface rust on brake discs is normal in the UK's damp climate and won't affect braking performance, but severe corrosion can be dangerous. For most UK drivers, the surface rust you see after rain will wear off after a few normal brake applications. Common UK cars like the Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf all experience this. There are three main causes of problematic brake noise in UK vehicles: 1) Metal particles in brake pads - these can cause squealing when braking 2) Worn brake discs - deep grooves develop over time 3) Debris or water between pad and disc - common after driving through puddles on British roads. For severe rust, UK MOT testers may fail the vehicle if the discs are below minimum thickness standards.
