How often should a car be driven?

A new car should be driven at least once a month. Since all components, including the battery, tires, and engine oil, are new, they are much more durable than those in a car that has been used for several years. For an older car, it should be driven at least once every two weeks or once a week.

When a car remains idle for an extended period, most of the lubricating oil on its moving parts will flow back into the oil pan due to gravity, reducing lubrication in various components. Without the protection of an oil film, metal parts can easily react with oxygen, forming an oxide layer that increases friction and makes the car harder to start.

Additionally, if the battery is not recharged for a long time, it accelerates the sulfation process of the battery plates, increases internal resistance, and shortens the battery's lifespan. Due to self-discharge, if the battery's voltage drops below 85%, it may become irreparable. Tires that remain stationary for too long can develop noticeable flat spots where they contact the ground, leading to poor balance and significant impact on the car's performance.

A car should ideally be driven at least once every two weeks to keep its mechanical components in good condition. Short trips of 15-20 minutes are sufficient to maintain battery charge, lubricate the engine, and prevent flat spots on tyres. For long-term storage, more precautions are needed, such as using a battery maintainer or overinflating tyres.

Leaving a car unused for extended periods can cause several issues. The battery may lose charge, fluids can degrade, and rubber seals may dry out. Modern cars with complex electronics, like the BMW iX or Tesla Model 3, are particularly sensitive to inactivity.

For optimal maintenance:

  1. Drive the car every 10-14 days to circulate fluids and recharge the battery.
  2. If unused for longer, consider a trickle charger to prevent battery drain.
  3. Check tyre pressure monthly to avoid flat spots.
  4. Use fuel stabiliser if storing for over a month.

Frequent short drives are better than occasional long ones for maintenance. If you rarely drive, a car cover and proper storage (dry, ventilated space) help preserve the vehicle.
