The maximum fuel capacity of a car depends on its make, model, and design. Most standard family cars, such as the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Corsa, hold between 45 and 60 litres. Larger vehicles like SUVs (e.g., BMW X5) or performance cars (e.g., Audi RS6) may have tanks ranging from 70 to 100 litres. Commercial vehicles, such as vans or pickup trucks, can exceed 120 litres.

Fuel tank size is engineered to balance range, weight, and space efficiency. A larger tank increases driving distance but adds weight, affecting fuel economy. For example, a Tesla Model 3’s battery range is equivalent to a petrol car with a 50-60 litre tank, but electric vehicles don’t use fuel tanks.

To find your car’s exact capacity:

  1. Check the owner’s manual under "specifications".
  2. Look for the fuel tank symbol near the fuel filler cap, often listing capacity.
  3. Search online using the model and "fuel tank size".

Note that filling beyond the pump’s automatic shut-off can damage the evaporative emissions system. Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended capacity.

A car can hold a maximum of 45 liters of fuel. The impact of fuel quantity and precautions are as follows:

Impact of fuel quantity:

The fuel tank capacity determines the driving range. For two cars with identical engines, the larger the fuel tank, the farther the car can travel. The size of the fuel tank is directly related to the car's fuel consumption. A full tank can typically travel over 500 kilometers. For example, a car that consumes 10 liters per 100 kilometers usually has a fuel tank capacity of around 60 liters. The fuel tank capacity varies by model and brand, but most car manufacturers follow a general rule: a full tank should support a driving range of about 600 kilometers, not less than 500 kilometers. The amount of fuel added to the tank is also related to the season and weather, as gasoline density changes with thermal expansion and contraction. If the fuel tank is designed to hold only 45 liters, the gasoline might overflow when the temperature rises after adding 45 liters. For safety reasons and considering the thermal expansion and contraction characteristics of fuel, car manufacturers leave some space in the fuel tank design. The fuel tank capacity indicated in the car's manual is not the actual capacity but the safe capacity.

Precautions:

If the owner chooses to fill the tank completely during refueling, they may find that the actual amount of fuel added exceeds the indicated fuel tank capacity. At gas stations, it is common to see drivers shaking the car back and forth to add a little more fuel or round up the amount, but this practice is not recommended.

From an engineering perspective, fuel tank capacity is constrained by vehicle design. Compact cars prioritise boot space and weight distribution, limiting tanks to ~50 litres. SUVs and long-range models, like the Land Rover Defender, often feature 70-90 litre tanks. The largest tanks are in commercial lorries, exceeding 1,000 litres, but these aren’t standard cars.
