Description

I am an experienced violin, viola and music theory teacher. After graduating from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and working as a violin teacher for a charity in India, I am now looking to expand my base as a teacher in London.

£30 per hour.
£20 per half hour.

I teach in students’ homes and I cover most of London - any area within an hour’s travel of Lewisham. I am available Monday to Thursday, 9am to 9pm.

My style of teaching is student led, with an emphasis on students’ health and correct technique. In addition to preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity exams, I can produce custom curricala for students with specialised interests. I am inclusive, and happily adapt my teaching for disabled students.

I teach classical technique on violin and viola, and teach both classical and folk repertoire.

I have achieved a Bachelor of Music in Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where I studied under Roger Chase, Richard Crabtree, and John Crawford, alongside many other experienced and talented musicians. This was the summation of a lifelong musical education, including a variety of masterclasses, leading several orchestras, successfully competing, and receiving scholarships both from my Conservatoire and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Dance.

Immediately after graduating I travelled to India to spend six months as a volunteer teacher with a charity teaching children ages 7 to 17 in a school setting, small groups, and 1:1 lessons. I was responsible for planning the scheme of work, developing, and delivering lessons. Prior to this I taught privately in the UK for two years, teaching a variety of students ages 9 to 60+ both 1:1 and in small groups. Having returned to the UK, I am returning to 1:1 and small group teaching.

For the last 7 years, I have additionally been studying and gaining experience in the Alexander Technique - a system of learning and maintaining healthy and appropriate posture - as it applies to music.

I teach all levels from absolute beginners to grade 8 in violin and viola, and music theory from absolute beginners to grade 6. If you do not currently have access to an instrument, we can do an introductory lesson using one of my instruments, and I can provide advice on purchasing your own.

I teach all ages from 5 upwards - there is no age limit on music. Although most musicians start young, I find that adult learners easily grasp musical concepts and can gain a deep understanding of musical contexts.

In violin and viola I can prepare students for ABRSM exams and Trinity exams up to grade 8, and in music theory I can prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity exams up to grade 6. In addition, I teach Suzuki repertoire, a particularly good choice for adult students or students who do not get on well with exams.

However, it’s not necessary to follow any of these syllabi - I’m more than happy to produce a fully customised programme for students with specialised interests.

I have an enhanced and up to date DBS and am a member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians.

My top priority is ensuring my students’ health. Even at a high level, it is easy to leave subtle technique flaws that can be dangerous, leading to RSI and musculoskeletal problems. My training, and experience of Alexander technique helps to counteract this and maintain well-being in the long term.
